Basra Fatwa

I saw a reference to this on Armies of Liberation (Head of Iraqi Muslim Scholars is a Thug and a Terrorist according to Iraqis), citing a hosted entry on Mudville (More from Basra).

I did not find any mainstream, or even peripheral, online articles.  There may be reference somewhere and my search just did not turn it up.

Whatever the significance of this particular fatwa, ignoring (or ignorance of) fatwas such as this, as well as the broader ignoring (or ignorance) of plurality in Islam, not only does a disservice to Muslims, but does a disservice to those in the “West.”  Allowing policies to be based on ignorance (or worse) may serve some parties, but I can not believe it serves us.

““It is prohibited to shed the blood of any Iraqi, especially the blood of our Shiite brothers and it is not permissible to assault people, their honor or possessions,” said a statement signed by eight scholars and preachers of Sunni mosques in Basra.”
